This is a map redrafted from Hall's 1895 Map of Georgia at the Carl Vinsion Institute of Government, University of Georgia. This serves to provide a "picture" of Cherokee county before it was separated into various other counties.












Cobb county in the early years of 1839. By this time, Marietta had been established and was crowned the county seat. The state began purchasing right of way for the construction of a railway.

Cobb county had some 341 square miles of land; The average value per acre in 1832 was $27.50. Georgia and Georgians

The first locomotive ran from Marthasville to Marietta in 1842, the name of the engine was Florida.









This is the map of Cobb County in 1863. A railroad had been established and began operation in 1845. The railroad ran from Marthasville to Marietta and beyond. Marthasville, named after the former Governor Wilson Lumpkin's daughter, became Atlanta in 1845. Martha Lumpkin's middle name is Atalanta.

In 1850, the railway had been completed all the way to Chattanooga.










By 1874 a few more townships were established.

In 1922 the state began an road building program.This built much of the roadway known as US 41 today.

Allatoona Lake, a man-made lake, was built by the Army Corps of Engineers. The dam was completed in 1947 and went into operation in 1950. This creation provided Cobb County with access to a 12,010 acre lake. It is the oldest lake in the southeastern United States created by the Army Corps of Engineers.
