Station A
In June of 2002 The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office opened the first Sheriff’s Sub-Station. “Station-A” is located in
the Old Threadmill Building Complex in the City of Austell.
As the volume of traffic and congestion and population increased in Cobb, the Sheriffs Office recognized a need to
move some of its services closer to the citizens being served. Station A was opened to better serve the citizens of
the Austell/Powder Springs area and improve utilization of manpower resources.
Although operating with a very limited staff, deputies from Station A served over 600 criminal warrants and
5,000 pieces of civil process in 2003. Additionally, the deputies provide an additional law enforcement presence to
the South/West Cobb area. The Station’s administrative offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.
until 5:00 p.m.
History
The Threadmill complex was originally Coats and Clark Thread Mill. The three story structure contains approximately 230,000 square feet of usable space and includes ample parking to meet the needs of the complex. In 1904, the Clark Threadmill Company, a Scottish textile company, purchased the old Acworth Hosier Mill, and in 1932, built Clarkdale, one of the last planned mill communities in Georgia. The firm hired engineers and a construction company to design and build the entire mixed use community on fifty acres. The Coats and Clark Thread Mill was built on top of a hill, surrounded to the west at the bottom of the hill by 138 homes on curvilinear tree lined streets. The recreational facilities and green space planned in the original village, which were added during its first twenty years, remain part of the historic district.
